Together with Justin Monjo, Richard Roxbugh undertook the task of adapting Tim Winton's novel about "the miraculous power of love, about a boy's visions of the world beyond, about the blurry distinctions between the natural and the supernatural" into a stage play for Burning House Theatre Company - a production which would bring him great acclaim. "That Eye, The Sky" was a surprise success in early 1994, earning Roxburgh a nomination for "Best New Play or Musical" from the Sydney Theatre Critics' Circle, as well as the STCC's John Tasker Award "Freelance Director". This production marked another marriage of talents between Roxburgh and David Wenham in the forms of casting, acting and directing.
"That Eye, The Sky" is the tale of a troubled family and a tortured world, as seen through the eyes of 12-year-old Ort Flack. Ort's struggles to cope with fair-weather friends, a family tragedy, and a troubling new stranger bring him face to face with the meaning of faith and hope, all the while carrying him ever deeper into manhood.
