The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Review by Lesley a.k.a. DraccyBride
A mysterious evil doer has stolen old maps of Venice and broke into the London Bank. Allan Quatermain (Sean Connery), the greatest adventurer the world has ever seen, is sent for by the Queen, but he's not as lively as he was in his younger years. When he arrives at London to take on the task he meets, first, his employer, the mysterious M (Richard Roxburgh). M has assembled a team of the most extraordinary gentlemen, and woman. The League consists of Quatermain, The Invisible Man/Rodney Skinner, Captain Nemo, Mina Harker, Tom Sawyer, Dr. Jekyll/Mr.Hyde, and Dorian Gray. They need to hunt down this masked villian and save the day. The make their way to Venice and Quatermain confronts him and discovers it's really M! M escapes but as they're leaving Venice they disover Dorian wasn't on their side in the first place and he escapes them. Nemo's ship is almost destroyed by bombs set by Dorian and triggered by a phonograph soundwavs, by M. They recover the ship and head to M's headquarters. Skinner sneaks in and returns telling of the inside workings of the base. The League attacks setting up bombs and releasing prisoners. Once again Quatermain faces M as M is trying to escape with the samples of the League to sell to the highest bidding nation. Tom Sawyer becomes a hostage and Quatermain kills the one holding him but is stabbed in the back by M. M jumps out the window, parachuting down and makes his way across the empty snow field towards his get away ship. Tom Sawyer shoots M and the League saves the day by destroying the base.
In my own words the movie is another action movie, not an insanely great one, but one enough to entertain. Rox doesn't appear too much but I LOVE the scene where they shave his 'stache, because hot diggity dang! Then he runs in that fluffy coat and he also RUNS dang fast again and very nicely with such a heavy box. Apparently Rox didn't like filming it, I probably wouldn't have blamed him, but it's fun in the end. I just HATE seeing Rox with that dead look in his eyes. Kills me. It's based on a comic book so what more can you expect from corny super villians (Rox is not corny but just he's not a 3D villian which is sad) and good guys?
Score: 3/5 .
